DIY Convertible Dress

Hey girls!

Yesterday I made a convertible flowy dress that I plan to wear to a wedding party this coming up Saturday. Would love it if you girls can help me choose =]. Please and thank you =]

*CLICK PICTURE TO ENLARGE*
-These are some of the styles I can turn my dress into
-Pictures of the back just shows you how the back side of the picture to it's left looks like
-I'm leaning towards 1st row/1st picture, 2nd row/ 4th picture and 3rd row/5th picture

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This dress took me 6 hrs straight with no break in between to finish  because I'm not a pro so I had to fix a lot of my mistakes along the way.
Ever since I saw a commercial last year where they showed an amazing convertible dress, that's when I started thinking that I can make my very own which is why I wanted a sewing machine for the longest time!
I started searching on YouTube for some tutorials but there were none!
This following video shows the dress that looks jsut like the one I saw on the commercial. This may or may not be the same brand/company:
*Video belongs to it's owner*
I loved the concept behind the dress in the first video but I didn't like how the bust area was so bare and so much cleavage was showing so I started experimenting this ONE video (credits to them) to see how I can make my own which has more coverage as well:
*Video belongs to it's owner*
 I loved how this one comes with a tube top while the first video would only depend on the two long straps to help cover that area.
When I discovered these videos last year, I knew nothing about sewing so I had no idea how I can make a flowy dress so instead, I made a tight tube top convertible dress (shown below) which is so much simpler and quicker. Forgot how long it took me because I made this dress last year but I'm guessing around 3 hours max.
My first ever DIY Convertible dress
Only included a few style in the collage
To make this fitted dress:
1) I literally took some stretchy fabric
2) Made a rectangle dress
3) Measured where the bottom of my bust was
4) Then cut open a slit on the front layer of the rectangle dress
5) insert 2 longgggggg rectangle pieces, length of the two pieces where around the length from shoulder to knee
6) Then sew the seems.
Mistakes I made:
-Should have made an hourglass shape dress rather than a rectangle because now my waist area is a bit too loose
- Should have added an elastic band on the very top so it wouldn't slide off my bust
- Should have cut out more fabric for seem allowance, now my dress is too short
-Should have chosen a thinner and stretchier fabric
~~~~~~~~~~

Let me know if you girls would like to see more close up pictures of my dress inside and out as well as an explanation of how I made my dress and I will try my best to illustrate that

-KEY POINTS to making a convertible dress are the material you choose and the two long straps you insert under the bust line
-all you really need is a thin and stretchy material like JERSEY KNIT
- cut two long rectangular strip to insert under the bust in order to make this dress CONVERTIBLE

Hope you enjoy this post, please let me know
which style from the BLUE convertible dress should I wear to the wedding party
on Saturday! Please and Thank you =]

this is so cool!! the blue is such a gorgeous color!!

i think the best one is the sweetheart neckline w/ the one strap i LOVE that it's so chic!!

Unknown said...

omg you are amazing. great color choice too. i like the second look with the sweet heart neckline. if the wedding is a little more conservative i think the first look on the third row is very pretty too. I like both your convertible dresses!

omg this is so freaking cool!!! i can't believe u made both yourself. wow!! i love that blue color too. i remember victoria's secret has a convertible dress too, but i don't think u can wear it as many ways as yours..

Whoa!!! That is amazing girl! I love it! I had no idea you could just make these kinds of dresses, how amazing would that be to have! Great work! I would have to pick picture one, that's my fav style =D

ooo i love these type of dresses, i bought a white one from american apparel, but i didn't even have time to try out all the different ways of wearing it yet!

from the blue dress i love the 2nd row 4th pic and the last row first pic. Very nice!

you are just too fabulous!!! I love how you said it so nonchalantly that you made the dress... i mean wow, I couldn't make that even if I knew how to sew!!! go girl!!! I love the back of the second version in the third row or second in the bottom row... and my favorite front is 1st dress in the top row and 1st in the second row... wow, i'm amazed!!! you've got golden hands :)))

Whaaaaatttt you make your own dresses?! You are seriously amazing! I especially like the tight tube top convertible one, looks very sexy!

crazy talented! eek i wouldn't be able to do the same. i'm voting for the sweetheart one!

its good enough that you can make a dress like that! and i can't. i would love to see a close up picture! i like those with the toga top XD

Kallen said...

Wow I really like the 2nd row 4th and 5th dress, it really looks like something you bought ^^

Unknown said...

i love the style of the first one in the 3rd row ... or 3rd dress in first column? hope thats not confusing! LOL I love all the styles you can do, so cool!

OMG! I think this is one of my favorite posts EVER!! Love! :0) I need a few in difference colors!

Oh I love the dress. great job! :) <3

this is so fab and really cool! huh! great job hun!

Marina said...

Oh wow, now I want to make my own dress too...even though I don't know how to sew >.<
I think all the styles look nice so it's a tough choice. Hmm..I think I prefer the 3rd row 5th picture. The twisted strap on the neck is very unique but that one seems to be more casual out of all the choices. I guess it depends on the atmosphere of the wedding? I think the 1st row, 1st picture might be a bit more elegant and might be more suitable for a wedding.

Ah I love this! I've been eyeing the Le Sac convertible dress from American Apparel for a while but it's so darn pricey and I know you have to sometimes cut it to fit. And I am also a very oblivious person when it comes to sewing so I feel like I'd screw it up. But I love this dress on you and how you utilized it. :)

i like the off the shoulder version. it looks classy and fun at the same time!

I think it's amazing you could sew this dress!!!! Sooo envious! I feel like sewing is the epitome of a womans skill in the domestic area besides cooking LOL and sadly Im lacking in both areas ><

My favorite styles would be the bottom left, second from the right in the second row and also the third from the right on the second row! Though I think any of these would be fine for a wedding and will look awesome too!

I remembered the place where I used to work at sold a multiway dress like this too except it was a bit sexier looking and would probably fit the club scene more though I could see it work if one wore leggings/stockings underneath.

If I decide to order Glymm I will definitely use your referral code!Omg your friend has the G3? Im soooo jelly! The G3 is the one with the flip out screen, that's the easiest way to differentiate the two lol, not to mention the prices lol

Unknown said...

Wow you are really talented! I can't even use sewing machine lol. I have seen those convertible dresses on a lot of different sites but they're pretty pricey considering it's just a big piece of jersey fabric. That's awesome how you made your own instead. For the blue one, I really like the first style! It looks a lot more unique than all the other ones. I really like the strapless version too. They both look great on you!

disqus allows me to monitor my comments with ease that is why i decided to change :/

omg from the picture it does have some resemblance with the sephora building in malaysia! but Royal Ontario Museum is so so much better,its so pretty!

i gotta agree with you on it losing its effect after using it for a long time,thats why i never stick to a product unless it provides continuous results. I will give the supplement up a search! sounds like a super good product thou I don't really like to swallow anything.

Hey sweetie! Did you decide on which style you're going to go with?

As for the g3 I think it's not too expensive but it's just expensive to me right now because Im trying to save money, every penny counts right? I think they're selling it for around a little under 800$ right now so its not too bad, I really wanna get it! >< lol

I was hoping to see a new post from that creative mind of yours!!! :) Damn, still can't get over how cool that dress is.. Haha, MOREEEEE!!! xD

In response to your comment:

I know, right?!!! And I'm thinking, "Ummm, you only have a tons followers because you basically begged them to follow you." I feel most people did it out of the kindness of their hearts. It's like why is there followers count so high, but their page hits are so low?!

ANDDDDD people actually FAKE giveaways?!!!! I didn't even think of that, but that totally makes sense! That is absolutely despicable! I swear, nowadays a lot of people feel the need to lie their way to the top. But KARMAAAA, they all eventually come falling down.. TSK TSK! LOL

Yes, we did find out, we're having a boy!!! :D Baby Ethan! YAYYY! *jumps up and down*

And lashes DOES take getting used to and practice. A lot of people complain the beginning how heavy it makes their eyes feel so they don't like wearing them. But you'll get the hang of them and LOVEE what they do for your eyes! ^_____^

I saw your comment on Kiss & Makeup's (Diane) entry about duty free and wanted to tell you that YOU DO HAVE A DUTY FREE IN CANADA!! LOL, it's right in front of the US border, they have one right in front of the US border too. They only let you shop there if you're going to cross it for at least 24 hours which is gay, but if you ever do come to the states, let me know! :D We can go shopping! lol

HI Alex, I was just wondering how you made the blue dress? Did you sew the straps under the bust or to the side under the armpits? Ive just ordered 3 metres of the same fabric and want to prepare!
Thanks :: xx

What you published was very logical. However, what about this?

what if you added a little information? I mean, I don't want to tell you how to run your website, however suppose you added something that grabbed folk's attention?
I mean "DIY Convertible Dress" is a little boring. You
should look at Yahoo's home page and see how they create news headlines to get viewers to click. You might try adding a video or a related pic or two to grab people interested about what you've written.
In my opinion, it could make your blog a little livelier.

I mean "DIY Convertible Dress" is kinda vanilla.
